Super Bowl Monday while overseas and in the military has a totally different meaning than Super Bowl Monday in the states, let's just start with that! We, as in at least our Brigade here at Camp Casey, got today off as a training holiday for the Super Bowl. There were, as in the states, numerous places to go to watch the game and have breakfast, yes breakfast with the super bowl. Now don't get me wrong, there was plenty of alcohol, just drunk with eggs and bacon, not nachos and wings. But it was a lot of fun.
Becca and I went to the officer's quarters for the party they were having. Yes, we don't actually stay in the officer's quarters, we are in places that are not nearly as nice, but officers know how to put on a pretty good breakfast. We watched the game which was obviously pretty exciting. The worst part was though, that while in another country you can't advertise US products, so we watched AFN commercials rather than the typical funny super bowl ones. The funniest commercial we got was two antelopes watching their smoking antelope friend get eaten by a cheetah because smokings bad!!! It was pretty funny, but most of them were about what to do when your spouse deploys, not exactly Clydesdale horse playing football, but we take what we can get.
On Saturday we went with our 1SG on another mountain run. This time we ran up Soyosan Mountain (aka soy sauce mountain by people who can't pronounce it right). It was not like the mountain we climbed last weekend. This one was actually a mountain, with a single dirt trail and climbing rails to help you out. Christina - think heart attack hill in Australia! It was tough. But still a lot of fun. Becca and I climbed with two of the young privates who are leaving Korea within the next two weeks, so it was fun to hear their stories and what they liked and didn't like. The view from the top was also pretty amazing, probably would be more so if Korea wasn't so hazy, so I'll have to check it out again.
All in all, it's been a lot of trying to finish in-processing, trying to figure out our job, trying to get settled, and trying to enjoy our time here in Korea. I'm still excited about everything, I'm learning a lot about my future in the Army and a lot about the opportunities I can take while in Korea. I may try and go skiing in a couple weeks, so we'll see how that all pans out.
